HOME SWEET OHM?
Much like irritating static heard on a radio, advanced semiconductor technology now allows utility companies to rapidly switch the power they deliver. This boosts efficiency and saves them money. But the resulting intermittent sharp spikes in the power delivered to your home or workplace means that virtually everyone is being constantly bombarded by pulsed electromagnetic fields.

Commonly referred to as EMF, these radiating electrical and magnetic fields form around the Alternating Current (AC) flowing through unshielded wiring. The electromagnetic radiation (EMR) given off by these powerful fields can vary significantly within the space of a few feet, resulting in 'hotspots'.

This invisible electronic and magnetic radiation causes constant stress and is now clinically associated with the sudden appearance of a multitude of central nervous system and neurological disorders - including lupus, attention deficit, hyperactivity, memory loss, dizziness, confusion, depression, immune system dysfunction , chronic fatigue , chronic pain (fibromyalgia), migraine headaches - and such modern epidemics as MS , tinnitus , ALS and diabetes .

Junk food diets, sedentary lives lived mostly in front of screens and air pollutants are all implicated in the skyrocketing rates of diabetes and asthma - particularly among children. But something seems to be triggering these modern scourges into pandemic proportions.

Is dirty electricity from poorly grounded wiring and devices as ubiquitous as dimmer switches, electric blankets, clock radios and plasma TVs a contributing factor? What about all that invisible smog from wireless routers, cell and cordless phones?

Yet, despite decades of scientific studies demonstrating the dangers of electromagnetic pollution, every day, levels of these invisible, human-made radiation fields increase as newer and faster methods of delivering more and more complex information via the airwaves are imposed on entire societies without adequate safety testing.

Exposure to all radiation, including electromagnetic radiation, gradually accumulates damage in human tissues, organs and brain neurons. As with increased exposure to any toxic agent, our intolerance rises. Just as chemical assaults from harmful scents and chemical emissions can lead to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, whereby adverse symptoms occur with repeat chemical exposures, repeated exposure to EMR is resulting in worldwide growing intolerance to this new form of pollution - and may even exacerbate MCS!

We cannot see, taste, hear or sense this “electropollution” - unless we are among the growing population of the electrically injured.

EHS - A GLOBAL THREAT
Today, more and more people are experiencing symptoms of EHS and other more serous ailments as a result of increased daily exposure to Dirty Electricity and EMFs produced by computers, energy efficient lighting, cell phones, cordless phones and other wireless devices.

While the number of EHS victims continues to rise with the North American medical community and government bodies like Health Canada turning a blind-eye to the problem, insisting there “is not enough evidence”.

Yet in Sweden EHS is a recognized disability with over 3% of the population severely affected. In a major report released in November of 2005 The British government recognized EHS as illness for the first time and said at least 3% of the population in that country is severely affected. A recent survey of doctors in Switzerland concluded 5% of the symptoms seen in patients could be attributed to EMF exposure. In the USA, the problem is becoming so acute, Florida Governor Charlie Crist has signed a proclamation declaring May 2009 as Electromagnetic Sensitivity Awareness Month in the sunshine state.

Here in Canada, it is currently estimated that between 3% and 8% of the population suffer from a severe form of EHS. World-renowned EMR neuroscientist Dr. Olle Johansson predicts that half the population in modern countries “can be expected” to be hypersensitive to dirty electricity by the year 2017. BUILDING BIOLOGY STANDARDS AND ESS QUALIFICATIONS
Beginning in Germany in the 1970's, Bau-Biologie (Building Biology) has studied buildings and human health with the aim of building and remediating healthy homes and workplaces. This group has developed EMR emission safety standards ten-million times safer than Canada's industry-created and criminally lax “Safety Code Six”.

We are experts in the use of scientific meters and measurements protocol recommended by the “Building Biology” organization (IBE in North America, IBN in Europe) to test for and eliminate EMR. We have been trained by Building Biology to the highest certification level, and we work as closely as possible to the testing protocol of the best informed world authority for biologically-based standards and assessments.

MEET MR. HERTZ
In assessing living and working environments for EMR and RF fields to protect health, we use state-of the-art scientific equipment to measure frequencies between 5Hz up to 6 GHz This represents the full scale of frequencies to which we are daily and increasingly exposed from devices such cell and cordless phones, wireless computing, stealth transmitters (as well as more obvious towers), toxic compact fluorescent and other “low energy” lights - as well as home electrical wiring and grounding errors that often invisibly impact living, sleeping and working areas.

“Hertz” refers to the number of electrical cycles in AC (Alternating Current) whipping our cells back-and-forth every second. (Our common 60 hertz North American wiring signifies 60 cycles per second.) Wireless devices in the 10 Gigahertz range whips the cells in brains and bodies back and forth 10 billion times every second.

WHAT WE TEST FOR AND WHY
In North America, building wiring and distribution wiring practices are extremely poor. In 1995 Dr. Andrew Michrowski of PACE International in Ottawa, was engaged by CHMC to study EMF levels in Canadian Housing. These and subsequent studies show that about half of the dwellings in Canada have some form of wiring aberration resulting in elevated magnetic fields that cause harm.

These common problems often result from grounding the electrical system to metal water mains, as well as wiring/ grounding mistakes that violate the Electrical Code, and even neighbourhood wiring flaws that can enter the home through cable and phone lines.

These all-too-frequent errors represent elevated risk for fire, shock and adverse health effects, and are entirely fixable by applying methods approved by Code. These mistakes are seldom identified by licensed electricians and electrical inspectors, who do not carry and are not trained to use gauss meters.

So this wiring aspect is first addressed so as to determine whether Code violations causing magnetic fields are present. This initial testing is detected by the skilled use of a gauss meter - or magnetic field detection meter.

AC ELECTRIC FIELDS
Using meters that measure low frequency electric field strength (V/m) and human body voltage (mV), as well as hertz (Hz) and harmonics. We next test for Low Frequency electropollution coming from electrical appliances, cables, wiring, outlets, walls, floors, beds and outside high-tension power lines. A “safety reference” value of less than 0.2 mG (milligauss) is allowed up to 60 Hz. Higher frequencies and their attendant harmonics must be more strictly reduced or eliminated.)

AC MAGNETIC FIELDS
The magnetic fields from the Extreme Low Frequencies and Very Low Frequencies associated with AC current flowing through household wiring, appliances and ground cables, as well as outside transformers and powerlines, are also checked for safe levels.

The Kleinwächter EFM 022 DC Non-Time Varying Electric Field Meter is a
“Professioneel elektrostatische velden meten” capable of measuring magnetic and electric static from synthetic sheets and clothing, plastic flooring and similar sources that adversely ionize the air, removing electrons with a resulting positive charge that makes so many people tired.

The CE certified Radalert 50 is a general purpose Geiger counter capable of measuring alpha, beta, gamma, and x-radiation from Radon leakage, as well as the powerful, invisible beams from unglimpsed radar sites. A red LED blinks and a beeper chirps with each count.

In our home, school and workplace surveys, Radio Frequency energy is measured using a German instrument made by GigaHertz Solutions. This HF59B power density meter measures the pulsed digital radiation produced by plasma TVs, wireless routers, portable phone cradles and wireless devices - as well as any radiation intruding from outside radio, TV or radar signals.

This pulsed value applies to single RF sources, such as a cordless or cell phone, cell phone tower, radio or television broadcast towers, and home and office wireless routers. More critical pulsed or periodic RF signals from infiltrating radar and broadcast sources are assessed more seriously - especially in the higher ranges.

Few people inexplicably stricken with sudden debilitating ailments are even aware of these dangers. But they don't end here. Invisible Radio Frequency (RF) and microwave transmissions carrying pulsed digital information from a burgeoning array of wireless transmitters and personal devices are also polluting our daily environment. We are all antennas.

Already adversely affecting millions of people in overdeveloped countries, electrosmog from voltage spikes in faulty wiring, as well as exponentially escalating wireless transmissions are rapidly shaping up to be the premier public health issue of the coming decade.

The effects of electrosmog are already becoming noticeable. People are screwing up. Even “Top Gun” executives glued to their cell phones and working in offices humming with computers, copiers and other electronic emitters are forgetting appointments and directions, and omitting crucial contract details that cost money, time and a lot of frustration. Studies show that by interfering with the subtle cellular whisperings in our brains and bodies, all this electropollution is making us dumber, as well as sicker.

WHAT DOES MITIGATION COST?

Remediation of elevated EMR conditions can often be achieved at no additional cost by simply removing, replacing or relocating high EMF-emitters such as plasma TVs, baseboard heaters, clock radios, “curly” CFL lights and similar appliances to safer distances. Dimmer switches are another major source of dirty electricity. These can be replaced with staged “click-switch” dimmers. Other mitigation steps may involve moving furniture and appliances such as televisions and refrigerators from walls opposite sleep areas.

The most important rooms in any dwelling are the sleeping areas where we are 10 to 100-times more vulnerable to any toxic agent during sleep. These areas can be protected by relocating clock radios and removing wireless routers. Electrical demand switches can also be installed that automatically sense demands for power - such as when a light is needed. Otherwise, these smart switches cut-off electrical flow from particular circuits, preventing electrical field contamination in all areas served by that circuit.

Electrical panels should be located at least 3-4 meters from sleep or work areas. If too awkward too expensive to move, they can be safely shielded.

Remember: Computers, TVs, many appliances and most home entertainment electronics remain on stand-by when switched “off”. For restful and restorative sleep, most can be plugged into power bars and simply switched off at night. (Consult yours owner's manuals before operating electric heaters, toaster ovens and similar high-draw appliances through heavy-duty power bars.)

Other devices that broadcast hazardous RF and/or microwaves throughout the home or building - such as cell phones, portables, WiFi and wireless computer routers - must also be replaced with “wired” versions.

One of the biggest sources of dirty electricity is also one of the easiest to cure. Many homes and commercial buildings are improperly grounded to municipal water pipes. This leads to elevated electromagnetic field contamination throughout the structure, and may even result in increased electrical conductivity in the surrounding soil harmful to humans, plants and animals. A skilled ESS electrician can remedy improper grounding using special connectors with extreme care.

The industry calls these measures “prudent avoidance”.
